Hunter' father, a band leader and guitarist, gifted his three-year-old son, after months of him brutalizing furniture at home, a drum set; one drum at a time. The gifted toddler went from playing bongos in his father’s band to a 4-year-old child prodigy, emerging as a national competitor, placing 3rd amongst adult competitors in Denver, Colorado.
By age 10, Gareth was making national appearances performing with the Florida State University Jazz Band, featured in “The Army Times Magazine” and a guest of “The Today Show”.
He went on to graduate from Thomasville High School and accepted a full music scholarship from Georgia Southwestern State University. This was a huge shock to those close to him and his family since Gareth received a full scholarship offer from Florida State University from Dr. Fred Kennedy when he was a sophomore in high school. Other notable scholarship offers; North Carolina A&T, South Carolina State College, Valdosta State Collage, Albany State University, Bethune Cookman College, Florida A&M University to name a few. His only regret was not taking the scholarship offer from Berklee School of Music after his freshman year of college while attending the invitational jazz camp at the University of Denver in Boulder, CO.
Clinton Harris Sr. of A & M Music offered Hunter a composing contract at age 19 which proved too tempting of an opportunity over college. His time under the wing of Clinton Harris Sr. yielded little results at the label but would prepare Hunter for a very successful independent project a few years later with an unknown vocalist Jeffery Lewis. The song “Round and Round” produced by Hunter and longtime mentor Leonard Tyson, performed by Jeffrey Lewis, which was released in November of 1994, in the southern region of the US would reach as far away as Vietnam within six months of its debut.
Gareth went on the road with Clarence Carter for over 3 years traveling more than 40 states and 4 countries. He has been hired to serve as Drummer for the likes of Clarence Carter, Bobby Womack, and Alexander O’Neal as well as countless lesser-known artists over the years. After almost 10 years on the road Gareth experienced the one thing he never thought would challenge his love for music; his daughter. The heartache of being gone months at a time and missing out on the small moments of fatherhood became too much for the 26-year-old drummer to bare and by age 28, Gareth left touring as his primary career. His love for composing and producing music never died and seamlessly he continued this part of his gift with Coastal Records and music executive Donte’ Gold. Amongst productions credits for many artists that unfortunately never received full promotion attention, his work with international Dancehall legend Beenie Man remains one of Gareth’s most cherished feats. The song “Fell Under Pressure” has yet to be released.
Gareth has dedicated the last 7 years to developing his craft through a series of relationship based, Indie genre melodies entitled “To Hell With Forever”, “Melting of Wedding Rings”, “Spread My Wings” featuring Jeffrey Lewis , “YES”, “Diggin You”, “What Do You Do” and many more sultry vibes with his fans describing his music as , “Intellectual Soul Music”- it makes you think as well as allows you the room to feel.
He’s performed for the Bobby Jones Gospel show as a featured guess once.
